Empowering the Next Generation of Creative Talent

In the Fall of 2021, I decided to apply to attend a New York-based event called Design Nation. Design Nation is an all-expenses-paid design conference that explores the versatility of a career in design, how design is applied across industries, and what it means to be a design leader facing today’s business and social challenges. After a few months of eagerly awaiting a response, I was thrilled to receive an acceptance to attend this conference, marking the beginning of an enriching journey into the world of design.

Meeting Keynote Speakers & Networking with Professionals

One of the most impactful aspects of Design Nation was the opportunity to engage with leading figures in the design industry. The keynote speakers ranged from partners at large corporations like McKinsey and Adobe to owners of renowned design firms such as Pentagram.

These sessions provided invaluable insights into the future of design and allowed attendees to pose questions directly to these industry leaders. Personally, I had the honor of engaging with designers I greatly admire, such as Daniel Arsham and Nicole McLaughlin. Daniel Arsham is known for his work that blurs the lines between art, architecture, and performance, often incorporating elements of decay and fossilization to create thought-provoking works of art. Nicole McLaughlin, on the other hand, is renowned for her innovative upcycling designs in the fashion sphere, transforming discarded materials into functional and fashionable clothing items.

Their openness and willingness to share their experiences enriched my understanding of the professional design landscape and inspired me to think more broadly about my career aspirations. These speakers stood out to me because they showed that it’s possible to blur the lines between art and design, being fluid and successful without confining themselves to a single category.

Hands-On Workshops with Industry Professionals

The interactive workshops were a highlight of the Design Nation experience. These sessions, led by executives from prominent firms like Pentagram, Bakken & Bæck, and Adobe, emphasized learning through collaboration and creativity.

It was in one of these workshops that I met Nathalie de Vallière, a Lead Product Designer at the technology-driven design studio Bakken & Bæck in London. Since meeting, we have stayed in contact with a mentor/mentee relationship , and her insights and advice has been instrumental in my growth as a designer. Nathalie’s guidance thus far has provided clarity on the responsibilities and creative opportunities available in smaller teams, affirming my desire to work in an environment where I can contribute to multiple aspects of design projects.

All in all, these workshops allowed me to gain practical insights into various aspects of design, from advertising and tech to digital interfaces.

The Design Nation Experience: A Catalyst for Growth

Design Nation provided me with tools and experiences that have significantly enhanced my design capabilities and professional network. Engaging in keynote sessions with Q&A opportunities, networking with top designers, and collaborating with like-minded peers left me feeling inspired and motivated. On the last day of the conference, I had the opportunity to have lunch with Mihika Kapoor, the founder of Design Nation, and some new friends, to discuss the event’s origins and its impact on the design community. This conversation, along with discussions with new friends and colleagues, opened my eyes to the broader implications of design and its potential to drive social change, and has really inspired me to become more actively involved with UC’s design programming here on campus.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on my time at Design Nation, I am extremely grateful for the growth and insights I gained. Attending this conference early in my design career was a transformative experience– It solidified my ambition to become a leader in the design community and beyond, with the goal of making a meaningful impact on humanity through design. This event not only enhanced my technical and creative skills but also instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to use design as a tool for positive change. I am excited to apply the knowledge and connections I’ve made to contribute to the design community in Cincinnati and beyond. Design Nation has truly empowered me to think globally and act locally, embodying the principles of a global citizen scholar.

PS!
I highly encourage other UC students to attend Design Nation if they can! It’s a true opportunity for growth, inspiration, and networking within the design community, and you can’t beat a paid trip to NYC ;)

Here are two of the interactions from the Q&A session with Daniel and Nicole. Until next time!
